A The Sunday Times 1989 óta állítja össze a gazdagok listáját (Rich List), melynek élén idén Alisher Usmanov, orosz üzletember végzett. Az 59 éves iparmágnás több ágazatban is érdekelt, ráadásul még az Arsenal futballklub 30% -át is tulajdonolja. Az oroszok igen jól szerepelnek a listán, az első ötben hárman is vannak. A leggazdagabb előadó – az egyébként minden évben jól szereplő - idén 70 éves Paul McCartney. A fiatal zenészek listáján pedig (Young Musician Rich List) Adele végzett az első helyen.

A Vaslady becenevet (nickname) a szocializmussal szembeni erős ellenérzései miatt kapta a 1976-ban egy szovjet újságírótól.

Margaret Thatcher kézitáskája politikai karrierjének szimbólumává vált. Olyan fegyverként tekintettek rá, amelyet politikai ellenfelei (opponents) vagy kevésbé szerencsés miniszterei ellen használt. A szó annyira híressé vált, hogy a Concise Oxford English Dictionary igeként fel is vette kiadványába az alábbi meghatározással: könyörtelenül, érzéketlenül bánni valakivel, valamivel (treat sb or sth ruthlessly or insensitively).

3.      The lady is not for turning - A hölgy nem hátrál meg

A kifejezés 1980-ban hangzott el, amikor Thatcher a párttársai előtt tartott beszédében a következőket mondja: „Mindazoknak, akik visszafojtott lélegzettel (with bated breath) várnak az újságírók egyik kedvenc kifejezésére (catchphrase) a „meghátrálás”-ra (the U-turn) csak egyet mondhatok. Önök visszafordulhatnak, ha akarnak. A hölgy nem hátrál meg.” Magyarán ezzel utalt arra, hogy ragaszkodik a politikájához és nem változtat a véleményén.

Hungary snow strands 10,000 motorway drivers

Snow - not unexpected in Eastern Europe at this time of year. But after a relatively mild winter so far this vicious icy blast caught many – including the emergency services– by surprise. Major roads across the country were blocked by snowdrifts of up to 3 metres as winds gusted to a 100 km/h. Dozens of villages in the western of the country remained cut off. The Hungarian Red Cross puts the number of people stranded overnight on the M1 motorway at 10,000 many of them foreigners travelling between Budapest and Vienna. Jammed trucks added to the chaos. At least 2 people were killed and many others injured in a series of collisions. Hungary’s Disaster Management Agency says more than 12,000 stranded travellers have taken refuge in heated emergency shelters. Some of those marooned used Facebook to appeal for help. Many abandoned their vehicles altogether. But some are reported to be still awaiting help. For them the troops cannot come soon enough.

A birtoklás kifejezésére a have és a have got szerkezet is használható, kinek melyik szimpatikusabb. Jelentésük azonos, alkalmazásukban viszont vannak eltérések:

1.have

Ebben az esetben a have rendhagyó igeként szerepel (have – had – had), amelyet különböző igeidőkben tudunk használni. Kérdésnél, tagadásnál segédigét használunk (Pl. Present Simple esetén do/does).

I have a sister.                      She has a brother.

I don’t have a sister.              She doesn’t have a brother.

Do you have a sister?             Does she have a brother?

2. have got

Itt a have segédigeként szerepel, kérdésnél a have/has segédigével kérdezünk, tagadásnál:  have / has + not szerkezetet használunk. Csak jelen időben használható.

I have got a sister.                                        She has got a brother.

I haven’t got a sister.                                    She hasn’t got a brother.

Have you got a sister?                                   Has she got a brother?

A két szerkezet között további különbségek is vannak:

1. az amerikai angolban a have, míg a brit angolban a have got gyakoribb

2. az amerikai angol, - ha mégis a have got szerkezetet használja -  abból gyakran elhagyja

    a have szót: "I have got a problem." helyett: "I got a problem."

3. a have írásban, különösen a formális szövegekben, míg a have got inkább a beszélt

    nyelvben gyakoribb

4. a have got nem használható abban az esetben, ha a have igével egy másik igét helyettesítünk

    I have breakfast at 7 o’clock. Itt az eat /enni/ ige helyett áll a have ige, tehát ebben az

    esetben a have got szerkezet nem helyes: I have got breakfast at 7 o’clock.

5. csak a have got vonható össze az alannyal (I’ve got….) , a  have nem (I’ve….)

6. a have got nagyobb hangsúlyt fektet a birtoklásra

     I have got a TV – I have a TV.

     Az első mondatban nagy hangsúlyt nyer a birtoklás, tehát, hogy VAN egy tévém.

7.  a have got egy további jelentéssel is bír méghozzá: : kell . Ez egy kicsit nyomatékosabb,

     mint a must (amit szintén a kell kifejezésére használunk, belső kényszer esetén).

     I have got to go now= Mennem kell

     I got to go now = Mennem kell (informális)

     I gotta go now = Mennem kell (még informálisabb:)

Az  amerikai Polytron Technologies cég tajvani részlege 6 év fejlesztés után még idén piacra dobja átlátszó mobiltelefonját.

Az áráról egyelőre nem nyilatkoztak, de azt már tudni lehet, hogy tudása nagyjából megegyezik a legújabb  okostelefonéval. Az Apple iPhone5 mobilhoz képest képernyője 8 mm-rel nagyobb, súlya pedig 25%-kal könnyebb. A telefon 90%-a átlátszó, csak néhány alkatrész, mint pl az akkumulátor, az SD- és a SIM-kártya látható, de ezek is a készülék szélére kerültek. A mobil mindkét oldalán megjelennek a képek, de csak az egyik oldalának érintésével aktiválható.

Én szinte állandóan megfogadok valamit újévkor, amit aztán egy-két nap (jó esetben néhány hét) elteltével már képtelen vagyok betartani. Apró dolgok, mint pl.: több mozgás, egészségesebb életmód, fogyókúra stb. A lista évek óta változatlan, hasonlóan a miattuk érzett frusztráció is, amiért képtelen vagyok tartani magam az elhatározásomhoz. The resort claims on its website that its buildings are based on the design of passenger submarines, which it describes as 'statistically the world's safest form of transportation'.

There are three types of luxurious accommodations that each guest could experience here: one above ground with a private beach, one over the water and one below the ocean’s surface, on the ocean floor. The accommodation units consist of 24 spectacular suites as well as a restaurant, bar, gym, and even an underwater wedding chapel.

Every room has a double bed and huge windows of acrylic plastic which fade into the ceiling allowing stunning views of the crystal clear blue water and the inhabitants of the ocean which can be fed directly from the rooms with a special remote control. All guests can use a submarine or a special tunnel from the beach to get into the resort’s restaurant, bar or spa.

A félperces videóban - Mr Jolie-n kívül - érdemes a szövegre is odafigyelni, melynek hiába érthető minden szava könnyedén, az egésznek olyan az értelme, mintha idegen nyelvből lett volna angolra fordítva Google Fordító-val ...
