1. The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970.

2. Earth Day originated in the US but become recognised worlwide by 1990.

3. Popular activities that people participate in on Earth Day include planting trees, collecting garbage, cleaning up coral reefs and sign petitions.

4. Earth Day was renamed officially by the UN in 2009 as International Mother Earth Day.

5. In Afghanistan in 2011 the Earth Day Network planted 28 million trees on Earth Day.

6. In Panama, in honour of Earth Day, they planted 100 species of endangered orchids to prevent their extinction.

7. By 2000, more than 180 countries participated.
